Normally Shy Gorilla Shows Researchers Her Newborn Twins
At First They Couldn't Tell
When the researchers at the Rwandan Volcanoes National Park found out Isaro, a 16-year-old silverback gorilla was pregnant, they were ecstatic! But then the team got even more good news when they went to check on the reclusive mother after giving birth!
A Real Blessing
Through the brush and the dense forest floor, they could make out not one, but two infant gorillas! Twin gorilla babies are extremely rare in nature. Research assistant, Didier Abavandimwe, explained to the Gorilla Fund.
"I couldn't believe my eyes because since I started working with the Fossey Fund in 2009, I had never experienced such an amazing event in the gorilla groups we monitor.
When I saw them, the first thing that came to my mind was that the birth of Isaro's twins is a blessing for everyone who works so hard for the survival of mountain gorillas in general, and Isabukuru's group particularly. It's almost like a reward, an encouragement, an excitement..."
This is exactly the type of thing the team prays for and it was happening right before their very eyes!
Definitely A Handful, Too
Just like baby humans, gorillas can be quite impish! They get into everything if someone isn't paying close attention!
They Keep Her Busy
From dawn until dusk, these babies need constant feeding, nurturing and their mother's undivided attention! It's a hard job but Isaro is an experienced mother - this isn't her first rodeo.
Holding Them Close
The odds of both of her babies surviving is very low, but Isaro is determined to keep them healthy and happy! So far she's doing a great job!
Showing Her Babies The Way Of Life
If all of this sounds like backbreaking work, don't worry! Luckily Isaro won't be alone in caring for the babies, explains research manager, Winnie Eckardt (Ph.D.).
"Isaro is lucky and can count on a lot of support in raising the twins by the dad, Isabukuru, who is one of the most actively involved in infant caring of all silverbacks, and from her older daughter, Keza, who is seeking any opportunity to gain maternal skills."
Isaro and her babies are just three of 480 mountain gorillas living in the sanctuary! They'll have lots of help whenever they need it - that's one of the benefits of living so close to family.

She'll Always Protect Them
The entire staff and the rest of the gorillas in their home are behind them, says Gorilla Program Manager Veronica Vecellio.
"For Isaro everyday will be a challenge to face and we really hope the twins will do well in this delicate period of their lives!"
We're all praying for the adorable trio, too!
